Rokokomania
A theatrical exhibition in textiles, ceramics and wallpaper

art exhibition in the Déjeuner salon
31 august-29 september 2024

Artists Anna Kjellsdotter, Anna Bergman Jurell and Sara Lundström take their inspiration from interiors in the court theatre in this art installation with eleven fictional tableaux and characters. The exhibition is a fusion of arts and crafts - tailoring, ceramics and wallpaper.

Wallpapers in the actors' dressing rooms, the painted marbling in the auditorium and the 18th century decorative elements on the stage have all inspired the artists. In collaboration with Tillskärarakademin in Gothenburg – School of fashion and stage costume – graduating students have created costumes after sketches by Anna Kjellsdotter.

The exhibition features some of the characters we could have met in Gustav III’s 18th century theatre.

Anna Kjellsdotter is head of costume and exhibitions at Drottningholms Slottsteater. She has worked as a tailor at the Royal Swedish Opera and as Head of Costume at the Hong Kong Ballet. In recent years Anna has also documented and dated items in the Royal Swedish Opera's collection of historical theatre costumes, and has a degree in textile science from Uppsala University.

Anna Bergman Jurell is an artist who works as a curator and exhibition designer. Anna also works as a costume and set designer, mainly for theatre. She studied at Dramaten with Lennart Mörk and Ingmar Bergman as her teachers. Theatre and film costumes as well as fashion and costume history have been the basis for curated exhibitions and books.

Sara Lundström is a wallpaper maker and designer trained at Konstfack (University of Arts, Craft and Design) and Hantverksakademin. She runs Handtryckta Tapeter (Handprinted Wallpaper) in Stockholm and teaches art and design. Sara and her colleagues reconstruct patterns and reprint wallpapers from different periods and contexts. Each new reconstruction involves a small research project, often starting with a worn, faded and broken fragment that is reconstructed step by step through analysis and comparative studies.

Tillskärarakademin in Gothenburg offers training in textile crafts for fashion and the performing arts, with a focus on quality, aesthetics and sustainability. Among other things, the school has a two-year university programme specialising in stage costumes and historical costumes for the stage, the only one of its kind in Sweden.

As their final assignment, this year's class each made a costume for the Rokokomania exhibition. Anna Kjellsdotter supervised eleven students who were given the task of creating a finished theatre costume based on Anna’s costume sketches and pattern construction. The assignment included specific challenges for each character, as the challenge with theatre costumes is that each garment is unique.
