The theatre was re-opened 100 years ago, in 1922, after a century of oblivion. Tonight we celebrate with French and Italian festivity music, dance and the stage machinery in action!

Salle des machines was a theatre built in the Tuileries in Paris in 1660, intended to show opera in magnificent framing and with spectacular effects. With an elaborated stage machinery, all the features of a Baroque theatre was possible. Cloud chariots flew and stage changes, changements à vue, took place in an instant in front of the audience's astonished eyes.

Conductor Francesco Corti has collected sparkling festive music by Rameau, Vivaldi, Gluck and Händel, among others. Tonight, in a spectacular program, we honor Agne Beijer and his rediscovery of the Drottningholm theatre, with all the magical stage effects as in the Salle des machines. The evening will also show top class dance, and we start with a festive speech!

The Drottningholm Theatre Orchestra

The performance is approx. 1 hour, 30 minutes without intermission.

- To be able to come back to the Drottningholm theatre and contribute to the reopening centenary is a great honour. Last time I was here it was as a dancer, in Semiramis and Medea in 2000. These ballets were reconstructions of how they could have been performed in the 18th century. Now there will be no reconstruction: instead, I wanted to play with a living theatre that can hold different expressions, and where the dancers meet the subtle and soulful heart of this theatre.
