Claudio Monteverdis mästerverk L'incoronazione di Poppea – eller Poppeas kröning – från 1642, med libretto av Giovanni Francesco Busenello, blir Drottningholms Slottsteaters stora produktion sommaren 2026. Åtta föreställningar ges mellan den 1 och 15 augusti.

Under sin tid som vd och konstnärlig ledare för Drottningholms Slottsteater har Anna Karinsdotter, tillsammans med musikchef Francesco Corti, presenterat engelsk semi-opera med Purcells The Fairy Queen, fransk tragédie lyrique med Lullys Armide, och – sommaren 2025 – tysk opera i eklektisk Hamburgstil med Telemanns Orpheus. Nu riktar vi blickarna mot Italien – mot operakonstens födelseplats – och sätter upp Poppeas kröning, ett av operalitteraturens verkliga portalverk.

Poppeas kröning blev Monteverdis sista opera. Med en text av en av barockens skickligaste librettister, Giovanni Francesco Busenello, kunde Monteverdi till fullo utnyttja sin samlade erfarenhet och skapa ett verk som än idag – nästan 400 år senare – betraktas som ett av operahistoriens mest fulländade. Här möter vi människor av kött och blod: de älskar, förtvivlar, intrigerar och hämnas. Operan är rik på svallande känslor, sensualism, kvickhet och humor.

Vi har engagerat ett starkt internationellt konstnärligt team och en drömensemble av sångare, vars namn offentliggörs under hösten. Med vår produktion vill vi lyfta fram verkets djup och komplexitet, och ge publiken tillträde till den fascinerande värld av detaljer som finns i både text och musik.

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Anna Karinsdotter, together with Music Director Francesco Corti, the Theatre has in recent seasons explored English semi-opera with Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, French tragédie lyrique with Lully’s Armide, and – in the summer of 2025 – German opera in eclectic Hamburg style with Telemann’s Orpheus. Now the company turns its gaze toward Italy – the birthplace of opera – to present one of the art form’s true milestones: Claudio Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea.

This was Monteverdi’s final opera, with a libretto written by Giovanni Francesco Busenello, one of the Baroque era’s most accomplished poets, and the work stands as a masterpiece of human drama and musical innovation. Nearly 400 years after its premiere, The Coronation of Poppea continues to captivate audiences with its vivid portrayal of passion, power, and desire. Here, Monteverdi gives us characters of flesh and blood – there are the lovers and schemers, the hopeful and the vengeful – in a world overflowing with sensuality, wit, and emotional depth.

For this new production, the Theatre has assembled a world-class international creative team and a dream ensemble of singers, whose names will be announced later this autumn. With this staging, we aim to illuminate the work’s remarkable depth and complexity, and invite audiences into the richly detailed world that lives within both its music and text.

In collaboration with Strömma we offer a lovely opera package weekdays 3, 5, 7, 11 och 13 August: A boat trip, a two-meal dinner on board, the opera performance on row 14-18, and bus back to Stockholm.
The opera packages are available via www.stromma.se from 25 November. The boat leaves from Klara Mälarstrand, near the City Hall (Stadshuset) in Stockholm.

A comfortable bus will take you directly back to Stockholm city after the performance/concert. The bus stops at T-Fridhemsplan and at the Central station/Stockholm City. Purchase when buying opera tickets, the ticket is SEK 130.
