The alchemist's secret

Esprit! Drottningholm and the quest for gold

A performance celebrating the growth of art, philosophy and science from the perspective of the magical world of the Drottningholm theatre and its ingenious stage machinery. Music, décor and lyrics derive from contemporary ideas of the four elements.

In a secret laboratory in the palace, Nordenskiöld attempts to apply the alchemical arts to turning base metals into gold in order to abolish poverty in the world. The King, who has run out of money and long been pinning his hopes on this divine art, has begun to tire of Nordenskiöld’s fruitless labours. To appease the King, a royal performance is staged on the four elements. The fourth wall between stage and audience gradually dissolves.
